About
Hello World ✋️ I am a PhD student in the DigiHealth Lab at the University of California, San Diego, advised by Professor Edward Wang. I am also affiliated with The Design Lab.
Previously I worked at the Upanzi Digital Infrastructure Network as a Research Associate under the supervision of Professor Carlee Joe-Wong, PI of the LIONS research group at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and Professor Assane Gueye , co-director of the Upanzi Network at CMU-Africa. I led the HumekaFL digital health research project, which explores efficient methods to diagnose birth asphyxia using babies’ cries and federated learning. I was also privileged to work in the Robotics and AI Lab under the guidance of Professor David Vernon, where my research in social robotics focused on developing ROS-based robot behaviors for effective human–robot interaction in Africa.
I design and develop end-to-end human-centered AI mobile medical systems that can interact effectively with humans, understand their needs, and help make effective and informed decisions.

Towards A Low-Cost Mobile Internet Measurement Infrastructure: An Initial Deployment in Africa
Africa’s broadband lags, with high costs & slow speeds. Current measurement tools, designed in the West, don’t fit Africa’s context. We propose a cost-effective, context-based mobile broadband measurement infrastructure.
HumekaFL: Automated Detection of Neonatal Asphyxia Using Federated Learning
Birth Asphyxia (BA) is a leading cause of over 2 million annual under-five deaths worldwide, with a disproportionate impact on developing countries; survivors often face not just neurocognitive challenges but also a range of other health issues. We leverage audio analysis and machine learning to enhance Birth Asphyxia (BA) diagnosis, emphasizing privacy preservation through Federated Learning.
FonMTL: Towards Multitask Learning for the Fon Language
We examine multitask learning in Natural Language Processing for the Fon language using a hard parameter-sharing approach. Tasks include Named Entity Recognition (NER) and Part of Speech (POS) Tagging, demonstrating the benefits of cross-linguality in low-resource contexts.
Culturally Sensitive Human-Robot Interaction: A Case Study with the Pepper Humanoid Robot
Socio-cultural factors play a significant role in achieving the trust and acceptance required to realize the potential of artifiical intelligence and robotics. Consequently, culturally sensitive human-robot interaction is essential for the adoption of social robots in Africa. This paper presents a system arhitecture for cultural-sensitive HRI in Afric using the Pepper humanoid robot.
Inclusion Drives Sustainable Development: The Case of Social Robotics for Africa
The achievement of sustainable development goals requires collaboration and inclusivity among stakeholders, with artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics considered powerful tools for leveraging solutions. In this poster, we argue that inclusivity cannot be achieved without cultural sensitivity being factored into the design of AI and robotics technologies.
An Intelligent based System for Blind People Monitoring in a Smart Home
We designed an electronic white cane using sensor technology to aid visually impaired individuals. The cane identifies obstacles within a 2-meter range and provides vocal instructions through a Bluetooth headset and a mobile application.

Culturally-Sensitive Human-Robot Interaction: A Case Study with the Pepper Humanoid Robot
18-980: M.S. Graduate Project report defended as part of the Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Advanced Studies Program (MS-AD in ECE).
Automated detection of neonatal asphyxia
This is the final report of the course 11-785 Introduction to Deep Learning given by Prof Bhiksha Raj. In this report we explored how deep learning methods can help diagnosed effectively birth asphyxia. We implemented CNN, Bi-LSTM and an attention based pipelines to perform experiments.
